Dark Forest Bath
This lower-level bathroom lacked natural light, making traditional bright finishes feel flat and uninspired. Instead of fighting the conditions of the space, the design leans into depth and atmosphere.
Existing elements — including the vanity, sink, and green countertop — were intentionally preserved to reduce waste and disruption. The design palette was then built around these existing materials.
A custom botanical mural, deep paint tones, updated lighting, and new hardware create a layered, immersive space that feels rich and grounded. The transformation demonstrates how thoughtful design decisions can dramatically change a room without requiring a full renovation.
Design Approach
Rather than trying to brighten a windowless lower-level bathroom, the design embraces the naturally darker setting of the space. The goal was to create a room that felt intentional and atmospheric rather than fighting against its lack of natural light.
Key existing elements — including the vanity, sink, and green countertop — were preserved to minimize disruption and unnecessary replacement. Instead, the design builds around these materials with a richer palette of deep paint tones, layered textures, and a custom botanical mural.
By leaning into contrast and depth, the space transforms from a standard basement bathroom into a dramatic, forest-inspired retreat while maintaining much of the original structure.
